Chapter 14

It was Monday morning when to my pleasant surprise Toby phoned. ‘I hadn’t expected to hear from you so soon, how are you?’

‘I’m fine thanks. Listen, I’ve borrowed Ann’s diary from evidence. If you want to look at it, it’ll have to be today. How you fixed?’

‘Today will be great, where and what time?’

We agreed to meet in Woodford. Not the Italian restaurant but a greasy spoon café. Far enough away from his stamping ground and an easy journey for me. Lunch would be a sandwich.

He was already there when I arrived and he greeted me warmly. It made me wonder if there was some other motive or reason behind this meeting. There was. And, as he explained, it was all to do with his ambition. His determination to drive his already successful career as far as he could.

‘I want to co-operate with you as much as I can on the Sharp case and, I’ll be honest with you, I have a selfish motive. I’m in line for promotion and a successful conclusion to it will greatly enhance my prospects.’

I admired his honesty. ‘Well, I’ve already told you, if I get anything I’ll gladly turn it over to you. But, what’s so important about this case?’

‘Come on Laura, given the job Ann Sharp held down and the prominent people she was involved with, you already know how sensitive this could all be.’

‘Ah! Now I see. The police would like to oblige the establishment by sweeping as much as possible under the carpet. Mustn’t embarrass the Right Honorables.’

‘No, that isn’t what I’m saying. It’s just that, it’s just...oh sod it! You’re right of course. Although, I can’t imagine why you would mistrust the establishment to that degree.’

We both had a laugh at this.

‘Toby, my only interest is to find out who ordered the hit on Ann. That’s why my client has retained me. If I manage to do that, everything will happen through you. You make the arrest, you take the credit. And, if you want to say you broke the case thanks to one of your informants, someone you won’t be able to name, that’ll be OK with me. I’ll be very happy to be left out altogether.’

He was about to speak but I wanted to ask something else.

‘What makes you think I’ll be able to make headway with this? I mean I realize you’re more constrained by protocol but I don’t have anything like your resources. Not only that, I don’t have feet on the ground. It’s just little old me.’

‘Oh no it isn’t! Don’t think I’m unaware of your trips to the Fox & Hounds. That is, the trips you made with Jim. Look, as far as I’m concerned, you’re a very good investigator. You’re resourceful, even though you don’t have a great deal of back-up. But, more than anything, I trust you and that’s very important.’

I was touched by this but not wanting to go all gooey, I changed the subject and asked about Ann’s diary. Without saying anything he reached into his pocket and passed me a thick envelope.
